Evergreen Earth is committed to creating a more sustainable future for coming generations. We are inspired by the First Nations’ concept which states that decisions made in the present should take into consideration their impact on the next seven generations.

The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy included dedication and love for “the seventh generation of unborn children.” According to Ojibwe activist, Walter Bresette, “If, as the elders have told us, we are our grandparents’ children, then we must today begin dreaming of our grandchildren.”

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

We are also inspired by Edward Lorenz’s theory, “The Butterfly Effect”, which describes how the very small can have a great and far-reaching impact. The Evergreen Effect states that the environmentally conscious individual can make a difference and contribute to sustaining the delicate ecological balance of this magnificent world we share. The moment is now for a Green movement to provide revolutionary solutions to the most critical challenges facing us—global climate change and water conservation.

The power of grassroots activism is to be an agent of change to improve the environment, simplify our lifestyles as citizens and consumers, and to invest in a cleaner planet for all. An ancient Chinese proverb says: “If we don’t change the direction we are heading, we will end up where we are going.”

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Smart consumers are looking for practical information and proven ways to act locally, recycle, reuse, and conserve natural resources and affect positive change as global citizens.

Change is not only possible, but probable through better education, training, community, and mentoring to empower people to make the right choices that, in turn, will inspire others.

“Green” and “Living Buildings” are the wave of the future and will create millions of new jobs, generate new goods and services, lower energy costs, saving consumers and companies billions of dollars a year.

The market of the future is here and that it is Green. Higher environmental standards will drive annual revenues from renewable technologies (PV, wind, fuel cells, and biofuels) in the new Green economy. In 2005-6, such revenues grew nearly 39%. Investors poured $1.8 billion into just California’s green technology companies in California alone according to John Doerr of Kleiner, Perkins. One market watcher predicted future growth of these technologies to reach a $226 billion market by 2016.

Energy policy is changed first through grassroots activism. An educated public has the power to influence private sector and government investment as well as health, corporate social responsibility, and sustainable business practices. Informed voters with personal energy goals are powerful and can direct government regulation and intervention like tax credits, mandatory fuel efficiency standards, renewable energy stimulus packages as well as national energy independence.

The power solutions of the future are renewable forms of energy, smart and micro grids, distributed energy systems, and smart energy networks. The sun affords an unlimited, and relatively untapped, natural resource for power. Wind is the cleanest source of alternative energy. The Natural Environmental Research Council indicates that wind power is growing on average 30% per year. The US Department of Energy has concluded that global wind resources could generate more than 15 times as much energy as the world is currently using.

Trends like rising sea levels, melting polar regions, the collapse of coral reefs and fisheries, show that our water planet has reached critical mass. Solutions like gray and catch water, rainwater harvesting, low-flow fixtures, and ocean and wave power are ideas whose time has come for populations who now enjoy water surpluses.
