RETHINK LOCALLY, ACT GLOBALLY
THE VISION TAKES FLIGHT
Today, young people are looking for answers about how to make a difference in the world they live in and to support their belief that the one they will inherit will be a better, more sustainable one. At Evergreen Earth, we agree with Yoda in “Star Wars” that: “Some of the questions are bigger than the answers,” and that none of us have all the answers to the most critical questions of our time.
The Evergreen Project (TEP) is founded on the simple idea that while change can be challenging—it can also start with just one word and one deed at a time—and that our informed, focused choices will achieve long term global energy and environmental sustainability.
TEP is a San Diego, California based nonprofit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to educate the public about alternative energy resources and production issues. The organization develops and leads programs that are designed to engage, inform, and transform awareness about how consumers and global citizens can be more proactive about their use of local energy resources.
OUR MISSION
In 2009, our first full year of operation we will focus on:
Education about sustainable practices through alternative energy focused, hands-on curriculum and accompanying interactive tools including online (eLearning), and peer-to-peer programs for middle school and high school students.
Forging strategic partnerships and key alliances with philosophically aligned organizations, corporations, and individuals to maximize its efforts and impact, effectively pool resources, and to avoid redundancy of efforts.
Development and piloting of a fully integrated, practical curriculum approach including innovative, inspiring, and engaging demonstration tools, which will generate excitement and interest in alternative source energy production.
Designing a modular approach to its curriculum as a prototype that can be utilized on a national basis and as developed by curriculum experts, classroom science teachers, and alternative energy experts.
An initial Pilot Program targeted to the San Diego Unified School District and serving a minimum of 6,000 6th grade students and 6,000 9th grade students.
Development of a three-week California Science Standards-based unit that will serve as a State template and present students with current and locally relevant, alternative energy production, and debuting in classrooms the fall semester of 2009.
Testing curriculum across public, private, charter, and parochial schools to assess broader, national applications of this approach to learning and engaging students in the field of alternative and renewable power source production.
THE EVERGREEN EFFECT
TEP is committed to responsible environmental stewardship and thought leadership. Its Alternative Production Source Energy Curriculum Project (APSEC) addresses an opportunity to improve curriculum in middle and high school science programs in the San Diego area which currently lack this critical, environmental component. It is our goal that by starting in our own “backyard” of San Diego, we can demonstrate a model that will expand to serve this pressing need in many other US communities.
TEP believes that the way in which each individual balances innovation with natural resources will not only determine our energy independence as a nation, but will also greatly enhance quality of life both locally and globally. It is all the collective changes each individual can make today that will favorably impact tomorrow’s global energy resources.
